Modi suggests legislation to push doctors to prescribe affordable generic drugs

Indian PM Narendra Modi at the dedication ceremony of Kiran Multispeciality Hospital in Surat Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government could adopt a legal framework whereby doctors will have to prescribe cheaper generic medicines than brand-name drugs equivalent to Patients. Modi said his government adopted a health policy after 15 years and limited the prices of drugs and stents, which angered some pharmaceutical companies.

"Doctors write prescriptions so that the poor do not understand handwriting, and he has to buy this medicine from private stores at high prices," said Mr. Modi. "We will bring a legal framework whereby if a doctor writes a prescription he must write that it will be enough for patients to buy generic drugs and he does not need to buy other drugs, he declare.
"It is the government's responsibility to ensure that everyone gets health services at a minimum price," he said. "The prices of 700 medicines have been capped so that poor people receive medicines at reasonable rates when facing serious diseases," said Mr. Modi. "We have also capped the prices of stents used in heart ailments," he said.

He said the government has implemented the "Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojna," where people get generic drugs from stores at reasonable rates. Modi also insisted on preventive health care indicating whether people adopt it, they should not visit hospitals.

 

"We need a jan andolan, jan shakti to provide effective health care to all people in the country," he said. "Our country has a different mindset, our country was not created by governments, our country was not manufactured by kings, nor by the leaders, our country was built by the service-oriented approach Of our compatriots, "he said.
