The government is taking various policy initiatives, including the withdrawal of tariff exemption, to discourage imports of bulk drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) into the country.

Currently, India depends on imports of bulk drugs / API on China for the production of certain drugs

"Recently, the government has withdrawn the tariff exemption on certain categories of bulk drugs / APIs to provide fair rules to domestic manufacturers," said Minister of State for Chemicals Mansukh L Mandaviya in a written response At the Lok Sabha. As India is a signatory to the WTO and TRIPS agreements, import restrictions have been abolished and imports made on economic considerations have slowly led to the current dependence, Mandaviya said.

In addition, the government is clearing the bottlenecks as the elimination of the environment that manufacturers are facing in order to stimulate the domestic manufacture of bulk drugs
