The Center should intensify the production of active ingredients used in medicines to meet the needs of the country, said a government institute after finding that more than 95 percent of the samples examined in a survey came from China.

The Noida-based National Institute of Biologicals (NIB), said more than 90 percent of the nearly 5,000 samples taken from airports and seaports came from China. The NIB, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has also asked the government to consider setting up a training academy in drug regulatory sciences to create skilled manpower which will help realise the objective of India becoming the 'pharmacy of the world'.

"In the three-month drug survey, 4,987 samples were taken from airports and seaports. 98.51 percent of these samples were found to be active pharmaceutical ingredients, 91.87 percent of which were from China. "One company from China alone accounted for 26.82 per cent of APIs imported into our country," it said.

The drug survey had found that over 10 per cent of drugs in the government supply chain were 'Not of Standard Quality'.

In light of these facts, it is imperative that the Government can take measures to increase the existing local production capacity of API and set up new manufacturing units to improve production to meet the needs of the country, the organization in its recommendation
