JSMC is an ambitious Graduate School with over 150 doctoral researchers who are educated in a structured, interdisciplinary training program based on top-level fundamental research. It conceptionally combines different research areas to a comprehensive picture of microbial communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de). Institutes at five faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, six non-university research institutes as well as 12 partner companies are participating in this cutting-edge research and training program.

Post: Doctoral Researcher Position

Mode of action and target identification of fungal secondary metabolites
Fungi secrete bioactive secondary metabolites that serve as chemical signals with important functions in host communication. This project aims to identify the targets of fungal secondary metabolites from Armillaria and Aspergillus species in order to reveal their mode of action, their meaning for communication with for example immune cells, and to evaluate their importance for pathogenicity. Focus is placed on human granulocytes and monocytic cells/macrophages involved in innate immune defense.

* desirable methodological skills: biochemical and bionalytical analysis of proteins and their functions (Electrophoresis/Western blot, ELISA, fluorescence microscopy), eucaryotic cell culture, molecular pharmacology (signal transduction, cellular functions).
* high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of JSMC
* creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
* an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the lively JSMC Community
* very good communication skills in English (instruction language at JSMC)
