The University of Calcutta was established by an Act of the Legislative Council (Act No II of 1857) of the then British India. A supplementary Act empowering the University to confer some additional degrees was passed in 1860. Another Act was passed in 1884 by which the University was authorised to confer honorary Degree of Law.The University Act of 1904 empowered the University to make necessary arrangements for the instruction of students, and though most of the teaching continued to be imparted in the affiliated colleges, teaching in some of the higher branches began to be organised under the University management.

Admission to Ph.D. (Tech) Programme in Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemical Technology/Oil Technology

Total Number of Seats: Six numbers (6), in the PhD committees of Chemical Technology in Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemicals Technology/ Oil Technology for the year 2012, Phase II are invited for PhD admission. Seats available under the supervisors for different specializations for the PhD programme are listed below:

Eligibility:
A) For Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemical Technology
1) Candidates having degree in M. Tech. in Pharmaceutical Technology or M. Pharmacy or M.S. in Pharmaceutical Technology (with NET/SET/SLET/GATE/GPAT/M.Phil) securing 1st class or equivalent grade (selection will be through Interview only).
2) Reservation of seats according to rules for SC/ST will apply.

B) For Oil Technology
1) Candidates having degree in Bachelor of Technology or Master of Science (without NET/SET/SLET/GATE/M.Phil) securing 1st class (selection will be through Written Test & Interview);
2) Candidates having degree in Master of Technology or Equivalent or Master of Science (with NET/SET/SLET/GATE/M.Phil) securing 1st class (selection will be through Interview only).
3) Reservation of seats according to rules for SC/ST will apply.

Entrance Test:
• The Ph.D. Entrance test for Oil Technology will be of 50 marks (duration 1 hr.) consisting of both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and short questions.
• The successful candidates will have to appear for an interview for final selection.

All Candidates are requested to download the Application Form from the university website and to submit the filled up Application Form along with the receipt of deposition of Application Fee within the due date to the Head, Department of Chemical Technology, 92 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata – 700009.

No TA/DA shall be paid to the candidate for appearing the Entrance Test or called for the Interview.

• Lipid Derivatives/Fat based Oleochemicals.
• Chromatographic Analysis of Fats, Oils and Allied Products.
• Basic Operational Principles of UV, IR, GC, HPLC, GC?MS, LC?MS, Short Path Distillation etc.
• Lipid Biotechnology.
• Fat?based Surfactants.
• Basic Chemistry and Technology of Surface Coating.
• Perfumery Chemistry.

Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemical Technology
Principles of Analysis of Drugs & Fine Chemicals in Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Formulations by Chemical, Physico-Chemical, Biological and Micro-Biological Methods. Biological Standardization. Toxicity Studies of Drugs. Statistical Methods of Evaluation.

Rational Drug Design. Study of Synthetic Drug like Prostaglandins, Steroids and anti-HIV, biologically active Peptides, newer chemotherapeutic agents, chemically targeted drugs etc.

Principles & Engineering, Fermentation of Dextran, Lactic Acid, Antibiotics of importance. Manufacture of Immunological Products like Bacterial and Viral Vaccines, Human Immunoglobulin, Monoclonal Antibodies, Tissue Culture Products and their utilization. Development of Genetic-
Engineering Products. Bioreactors & Biosensors.

Pre-formulation, manufacturing techniques of Novel Drug Delivery Devices. Unit Operations involved in formulations. Stability Studies, Product Development, GMP/GLP. Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamic, Drug interactions.

Optimization of Pharmaceutical and Bioprocesses. Programming languages-Fortran, C, C++ and Basic.
