Job description
Funded by the Lung Foundation Netherlands, a consortium of the University of Groningen (RUG), the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC) and Oxford University is looking for two PhD candidates (one stationed at the RUG and one at the AMC) with an interest in translational research in the field of Respiratory Medicine. The consortium project will investigate the effects of oxidative stress on macrophage function in order to predict an/or prevent exacerbations of asthma and COPD.

Job description for the PhD position at RUG
This part of the project is devoted to testing novel therapeutic strategies to relieve oxidative stress in lung tissue to investigate whether this dampens exacerbation severity in animal models of asthma and COPD. The project involves mouse models of house dust mite-induced asthma and cigarette smoke-induced COPD combined with influenza infection. Transcriptome analysis of macrophages isolated from lung tissue of these models will be done in collaboration with the University of Oxford to identify possible new drug targets.

Job description for the PhD position at AMC
In this part of the project sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage macrophages are characterized phenotypically and functionally before and after an experimental rhinovirus16-induced exacerbation in patients compared to controls. The studies are aimed at clarifying why patient’s macrophages, in contrast to those from healthy controls, will respond differently to reactive oxygen species and how that affects the subtypes of macrophages and their function. Transcriptomics will be performed in collaboration with the University of Oxford.
