As per PharmaTutor survey, only 15 out of 100 candidates attaching covering letters along with their CV. But make it clear in your mind, it is utmost important part of your job application.
Cover letters may also serve as marketing devices for prospective job seekers. Job seekers frequently send a cover letter along with their CV or employment application as a way of introducing themselves to potential employers and explaining their suitability for the desired position. Remember that covering letter is not your autobiography. So forget about writing an essay on your career and education till date. But make it more specific in term of a job or a post, you are applying for. There are some Does and Don’ts mention here.

Does:
Make it in format of Header, Introduction or subject, Body and Closing.
* In header try to make it more specific to a person who will going to review your resume. Avoid to write “Dear Sir/Mam” but instead of that mention name of a reviewer. And if you don’t know the name of a person then search it on companies wesites.
* In subject of covering letter mention post of desired vacancy.
* Body will include your total experience in particular field of pharma industry. Mention here a reason that why you are suitable for this position and why you are in need of this particular job. If there are any special things to note such as availability date, they may be included as well. Write how passionate you are for that particular job.
* A closing sums up the letter, and indicates the next step the applicant expects to take. It may indicate that the applicant intends to contact the employer. After the closing is a valediction ("Sincerely"), and then a signature line.

Don’ts:
* Do not take it as abstract of your resume.
* Avoid writing your current salary status until the applicant asked to do so.
* Also do not include any negatives like gap period, reasons for leaving last job etc. Answer them only if you asked in personnel interview. These negatives are best delivered in person during the interview so that your personality and skills can counter them.
* In addition to the layout, don't just repeat terms from your resume.
