Regional Medical Research Centre, Port Blair is one of the six Regional Centres of Indian Council of Medical Research. The Centre was incepted in 1983 with the objectives of carrying out biomedical research on communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in Andaman and Nicobar Islands with a special emphasis on the health problems of the indigenous tribes and to develop technical manpower locally. However, during the past two five-year plans, the Centre recognized its identity and made rapid strides towards achieving its set objectives.

The Regional Research Centre of Ayurveda (RRCA), Port Blair previously known as Ayurveda Tribal Health Care Research Project [ATHCRP] was established in the year 1984 at Malacca, Car Nicobar of A&N Islands. Unfortunately, this Research Centre along with all the records had submerged in the sea during the Earthquake and Tsunami on 26th December 2004. Thereafter this project was shifted from Car Nicobar to 30 bedded AYUSH Hospital, Atlanta Point, Port Blair on 14th February 2005 and henceforth it functioned there up to January 2015.  Presently, this Unit is functioning in Type-II Quarter at Junglighat, Port Blair and providing Ayurvedic treatment to Tribal and general population of these Islands.

These two groups are separated by the 10° N parallel, the Andamans lying to the north of this latitude, and the Nicobars to the south. The capital of this territory is the Andamanese town of Port Blair.There are 572 islands in the territory, of which only some 38 are permanently inhabited. Most of the islands (about 550) are in the Andamans group, 26 of which are inhabited.
