Established in 1984, the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) is one amongst the 38 national laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and is its youngest laboratory. Set-up to be a fore-runner in the area of Biotechnology, the Institute occupies an   area of about 47 acres, of which the labs cover  22 acres and the residential campus, 25 acres. The Institute has a built up area of about 3.60 lakh sq. ft., is spread over five main buildings, the main R&D block (~2.00 lakhs sq. ft.), Fermentation block (~0.50 lakhs sq. Ft.), Animal House (~0.30 lakhs sq. ft.), Workshop, Stores and Services area (~0.50 lakhs sq. ft.), and Cafeteria (~0.10 lakhs sq. ft.)

Director, Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), invites exceptionally motivated candidates to appear for a walk-in interview on July 15, 2013, (Reporting time 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon) for pursuing doctoral research at IMTECH under the aegis of the Ph.D. degree program being jointly run by IMTECH and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.  The candidates who have passed MSc and cleared any of the following examination (with valid fellowship) are eligible to attend the interview:
(a)CSIR-UGC NET (NET-LS not eligible)
(b) DBT-JRF examination (‘A’ Category only)
(c) DST INSPIRE Fellowship
(d) ICMR-JRF examination (those selected for working only in ICMR Projects are not eligible).

IMTECH is a multidisciplinary institute with excellent research facilities, state of the art computational and library facilities, and faculty with interests in many different areas of modern biology and biotechnology (please visit our website imtech.res.in for information on different areas and faculty activities). During this intake, openings may be available in the subjects illustratively mentioned below. Further details will be available to those appearing for the walk-in interview(s), which will be conducted, for each candidate, subject to the fulfillment of the required essential qualifications. Candidates may be required to identify their preferred areas/sub-areas for research before being interviewed (see below).

(a) Molecular Biology: Molecular biology of pathogens, gene silencing, stress tolerance, signal transduction, gene expression, genome-wide analysis
(b) Cell Biology & Immunology: Host- pathogen interactions, TB vaccine development, T- and B-cell activation, infectious agents & vaccine targets, protein trafficking
(c) Protein Science & Engineering:  Structure-function relationships, design, folding, engineering, stability, expression, structural analysis and modeling, crystallization, structure determination of proteins and structure- based drug designing etc.
(d) Applied & Environmental Microbiology: Microbial diversity, environmental biotechnology, biotransformations, extremophiles and their metabolites
(e) Bioinformatics: Computer-aided vaccine and drug development, genome annotations, protein structure prediction, molecular simulations
(f) Bioorganic Chemistry: Enzymes and abzymes in organic synthesis, biocatalysis and bioactive molecules
(g) Peptide Chemistry: Peptide synthesis, conformational characterization and modelling
(h) Biochemical Engineering: Fermentation & downstream processing, process development and optimization, bioreactor modelling and control
(i) Biosensors & Bionanotechnology: Immunodiagnostics of pesticides and other important clinical biomarkers  based on bioprobe-electronic interfacing.

Eligibility and Selection:
Candidates with Master's Degree or equivalent in any branch of science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Pharmacy) or in chemical/biochemical engineering and have qualified for obtaining research fellowship after passing CSIR/UGC NET or DBT JRF examination (‘A’ Category) or DST INSPIRE Fellowship or ICMR JRF examination are eligible to be interviewed.  Please note that valid proofs of having passed the masters’ level and fellowship examinations (with valid fellowship) are mandatory for being eligible to be interviewed. Those coming for interview must be prepared to be present in Chandigarh for three days, which is the approximate time required to finalize the admission of successful candidates.  No TA/DA or any other expenses will be paid for appearing in the interview.
