Job Description
Lead position contributing to governing functions of the Medical Writing team. Manages project timelines, budgets, and resources. Effectively assigns and communicates priorities and work direction to ensure completion of assigned tasks on time and within budget. Oversees the medical writing aspects of projects and operations, ensuring high quality and timely delivery of medical/scientific products to internal and external clients. Builds client relationships and identifies and resolves complex client management issues. Acts as resource for questions relating to project or client resources and serves as subject matter expert for assigned projects. Involved with hiring, training and mentoring staff

Essential Functions and Other Job Information
- Supervises the overall operational activities of project(s) within the Medical Writing Department, including but not limited to: Provide short-term and long-term resource planning in order to assign project activities to appropriate and available staff. Hold regularly scheduled meetings with staff and provide updates to senior management. Review and approve semimonthly time sheets. Assist staff to forecast project-related costs and timelines for completion. Hires and evaluates employees. Recommends salary levels and promotions.
- Oversees the preparation of Medical Writing deliverables. Organizes processes for completion of projects within established timelines. Evaluate timeliness and quality of deliverables and provide updates to senior management. Assists writers in presentation and interpretation of data. Performs senior review to ensure overall adherence to departmental standards. Provide input and review group SOPs and WPDs;evaluates compliance with SOP/WPD on an ongoing basis. Builds client relationships and identifies and resolves complex client management issues.
- May support marketing presentations to potential clients on the capabilities of the Medical Writing department. Interacts with management and Bids and Contracts and Business Development to support proposals for Medical Writing projects.
- Provides input on training programs for Medical Writing. Ensures that writers on assigned project are adequately trained in basic writing skills. Arranges for internal or external training courses as needed. Provide administrative project training to writers including issues relating to budgets, timelines, and sponsor contact. Provides and/or arranges training on SOP/WPD materials.

Qualifications
BS/BA (scientific discipline preferred) with at least 5 years relevant experience or an advanced degree with at least 3 years relevant experience
• Ability to successfully lead the medical writing elements of a project
• At least 1 year of leadership responsibility
• Experience mentoring personnel and coordinating the work of project teams

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Highly developed and competent data interpretation and medical writing skills, including grammatical, editorial, and proofreading skills. Experienced in peer/senior level level.
- Working knowledge of project management and organizational skills, including the ability to plan and manage projects,
- create and modify budgets, develop timelines, allocate resources, and forecast departmental workload
- Good interpersonal skills including problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skills; self-motivated and adaptable; good presentation skills
- Effective interpersonal oral and written communication skills; strong negotiation skills.
- Mental skills required in areas of: numeracy, language, analytical, investigative, verbal & written communication, attention to detail, customer contact, multiple project handling,
- reading and interpretation of data
- Good knowledge of relevant document development guidelines
- Good judgment; high degree of independence in decision making and problem solving
- Self-motivated and adaptable
- Ability to mentor and direct junior level staff.

Management Role:
Directly supervises individual contributors, administrative support and / or entry-level professionals. Often limited to single project, therapeutic area or work team.
