The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The 22 member committee headed by Sri N.R.Sarkar, in its report, recommended the establishment of four Higher Technical Institutions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions, possibly on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, with a number of secondary institutions affiliated to it.

Qualifications and Relevant Experience : Four years Bachelors Degree in Natural or Agricultural Sciences / Masters Degree in Natural or Agricultural Sciences / BVSc / B.Pharm or Bachelors degree in Engineering or Technology or Medicine or from a recognized University or equivalent Max. Age - 35 Yrs i) 37,000/- + HRA to Scholars who are selected through (a) CSIR-UGC NET or GATE or (b) A selection process through National level examinations conducted by Central Government Departments and their Agencies and Institutions ii) 28,000/- + HRA for others who do not fall under above

Desirable Criteria : Strong inclination to do research in neurosciences, with prior experience in the field will be given preference. Ability to code in MATLAB and inclination to performing neurophysiological experiments is desired. Candidates need to follow on and apply to the PhD program in IIT Kharagpur through an appropriate department.
