Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, is an autonomous R&D Institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The Institute is engaged in frontier areas of research in the specific domain of Physical, Chemical, Mathematical and Life Sciences. The Institute’s aim is to contribute to basic sciences and develop technology using local resources through strong interdisciplinary research approach across different divisions.
The Institute invites applications against the available vacancies (2026-2027) for short-term winter internship/training (2 months) and project dissertation (6 months) in the following areas
Subject area : Eligibility criteria
1. Drug Discovery/Snake Venom : Pursuing M.Sc. in Life Sciences.
2. Material Science / Nanoscience and Nanotechnology :
• Internship: Pursuing Bachelor's/Master's in Chemistry, Physics, Nanoscience, Material Science, or Engineering.
• Dissertation: Pursuing Master's in Chemistry, Physics, Nanoscience, or Material Science.
3. Microbiome/Probiotics :
• Internship: Pursuing B.Sc./B.Tech in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry.
• Dissertation: Pursuing M.Sc. in Microbiology or Biotechnology.
4. Condensed Matter Physics/Materials Science : Pursuing B.Sc./B.Tech./B.S./M.Sc./M.Tech./M.S. in Physics or Physical Science.
5. Experimental Soft Condensed Matter/Material Science/Polymer Sciences/Biomaterials/Nanomaterials : Pursuing B.Sc./B.Tech./B.S./M.Sc./M.Tech./M.S. in Physics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Chemical Science, Biotechnology, or Botany.
6. Condensed Matter Physics/Materials Science – Computational : Pursuing B.Sc./M.Sc. in Physics.
7. Antimicrobial Agents Against Drug-Resistant Human Pathogens and Plant-Microbe Interactions :
• Internship: Pursuing B.Sc./M.Sc. in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Botany.
• Dissertation: Pursuing M.Sc. in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Botany.
8. Nanoscience/Materials Science/Condensed Matter Physics : Pursuing M.Sc./M.Tech. in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science.
9. Applied Microbiology and Biomedicine : Pursuing M.Sc. in any branch of Life Sciences, M.Pharm., M.Sc. in Bioinformatics, or M.S. in Pharmacy.
10. Pharmacology and Drug Discovery : Pursuing B.Pharm. (Pharmacy), B.Tech. (Biotechnology), M.Pharm. or M.S. Pharm (any branch), or M.Sc. in Zoology/Biotechnology.
11. Hydrodynamics and Applied Mathematics : Pursuing a Master's degree (including M.Tech.) or having completed a Bachelor's degree (including B.Tech.) in Mathematics and allied areas.
12. Biophysics; Cold Plasma Applications in Biology; Self-Assembly : Pursuing B.Sc./M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Biotechnology; M.Pharm.; M.Tech. in Medical Devices, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, ICE, Biomedical Technology, or Bioscience and Engineering.
13. Plasma Physics, Cold Plasma Application : Pursuing B.Sc. in Physics, M.Sc. in Physics/Chemistry, B.Tech./B.E. in Electrical Engineering, M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering, or M.E. in Electrical Engineering.
14. Infectious Diseases, Quorum Sensing, Bacterial Biofilm, and Drug Discovery Against Antimicrobial Resistance : Pursuing B.Sc./B.Tech./B.Pharm. or M.Sc./M.Tech./M.Pharm. in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or any branch of Life Sciences.
15. Plant Biotechnology and Microbial Genetics : Pursuing B.Tech. in Biotechnology, B.Pharm. or B.S. Pharm (any branch), M.Pharm. or M.S. Pharm (any branch), or M.Sc. in Botany, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Life Sciences.
16. Condensed Matter Physics/Materials Science/Thin Films/Ferroelectrics/Optical Properties :
• Internship: Pursuing B.Sc./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.Tech. in Physics, Chemistry, Nanoscience, or Material Science.
• Dissertation: Pursuing M.Sc./M.Tech. in Physics, Chemistry, Nanoscience, or Material Science.
17. Supramolecular Chemistry/Nanozyme/Sensors :
• Internship: Pursuing B.Sc./M.Sc. in Chemistry.
• Dissertation: Pursuing M.Sc. in Chemistry, Physics, Biotechnology, or Life Sciences.
Interested candidate should apply online in the institute website (www.iasst.gov.in) within 15 days from the date of publication of the advertisement. Incomplete applications and those received after the closing date will not be entertained. Candidates should submit a No Objection Certificate from the parent institute during online application submission. Those who are unable to submit NOC during the application process should upload a self- declaration certificate. NOC submission is compulsory before joining the internship/ dissertation/training at IASST.
Selection Procedure : Selection will be based on merit (based on the last qualifying exam)/interview and the selected candidates' list will be uploaded in the IASST website. The decisions of the admission committee will be final and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
Accommodation : Accommodation in the institute's Dormitory is subject to its availability on the joining date.
Preference will be given to students from outside Guwahati.
The internship/training programme will start from December 2026 and the dissertation from January 2027.
IASST’s Right : If suitable candidates are not found in any discipline, IASST reserves the right not to fill up its position for the winter session.
