Alembic Pharmaceuticals is seeking Medicinal Chemistry Lead to spearhead our small-molecule and peptide drug discovery programs. This is a high-impact leadership role with end-to-end responsibility, from target ideation to clinical candidate nomination, shaping Alembic’s next- generation therapeutic pipeline.
Post : Scientist – DMPK & Bioanalytical Chemistry - Drug Discovery
Job Description
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on DMPK/bioanalytical Scientist to independently develop, troubleshoot, and execute assays supporting drug discovery and preclinical programs, while helping build future DMPK capabilities. Candidates must have substantial hands-on assay development experience and be able to lead experimental work from day one with minimal technical supervision. The successful candidate will independently solve technical challenges, generate reliable data to guide drug discovery and lead candidate selection, and collaborate effectively across disciplines while maintaining high scientific and quality standards. We are looking for a passionate, proactive self-starter with a go-getter attitude who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment and takes ownership of scientific challenges.
This position offers an opportunity to contribute to innovative drug discovery programs in India while collaborating with global scientific partners, including those in the U.S. biotech ecosystem. The successful candidate will gain broad exposure to multidisciplinary research, expand their drug discovery expertise, and play a direct role in advancing promising therapeutic candidates
Key Responsibilities
• Demonstrated working knowledge of DMPK concepts and experience working with small molecules.
• Own bioanalytical assay development from start to finish: translate project needs into experimental plans; select methods, controls, and acceptance criteria; optimize sample preparation and instrument conditions; assess assay performance; and document results.
• Independently develop and execute LC–MS/MS methods for quantifying compounds and metabolites in plasma, tissue, and other biological matrices to support discovery PK and preclinical studies.
• Design, execute, or collaborate (with biologist/analytical scientist) and interpret the ADME assays for NCE screening, e.g., stability studies in liver microsomes/S9, hepatocytes, plasma; permeability assays in CaCo2/MDCK cell lines (Or PAMPA), CYP reaction phenotyping, DDIs, transporter interaction studies, and other in vitro ADME experiments.
• Perform high-throughput biological sample extraction, including Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE), Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), and Protein Precipitation (PPT) from matrices like plasma and serum
• Diagnose and resolve problems involving extraction recovery, matrix effects, selectivity, sensitivity, carryover, reproducibility, analyte stability, and chromatographic performance. Qualify/validate methods to a level appropriate for their intended use and study requirements.
• Interpret data critically, identify limitations, and recommend clear next steps
• Communicate progress, technical challenges, results, and recommendations clearly in written reports and scientific discussions.
• Maintain complete experimental records, method documentation, and instrument maintenance and calibration records.
Qualifications Experience
• A Bachelors/ Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, or a closely related discipline.
• Hands-on industry experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or contract research organization is a must
• Demonstrated independent development of bioanalytical assays, from initial design through optimization, troubleshooting, and routine use.
• Strong practical expertise in LC–MS/MS, HPLC, prep HPLC, biological sample preparation, and quantitative data analysis.
• Hands-on experience in biological matrix sample preparation and cleanup using protein precipitation, solid-phase extraction (SPE), and liquid–liquid extraction (LLE).
• Experience developing and running cell-based permeability assays and interpreting the resulting data e.g. Caco2/MDCK or PAMPA
• A strong understanding of chromatography, column selection, mass spectrometry, and assay performance assessment.
• Experience supporting drug discovery, lead optimization, or preclinical programs.
• Clear written and verbal communication: able to explain experimental rationale, communicate uncertainty, and turn analytical findings into actionable recommendations.
• Strong experimental judgment, time management, and the ability to manage competing priorities independently.
• Ability to adapt assay methods to different target classes and therapeutic areas.
• Proficiency in GraphPad Prism and relevant instrument analysis software.
• Demonstrate a go-getter mindset with high ownership, urgency, and solution-oriented thinking
Experience limited to running established methods, coordinating outsourced studies, reviewing data, or supervising laboratory staff will not meet the requirements of this role. Applicants must demonstrate substantial personal bench work and independent method development
Additional Experience Valued: -
• Preparative HPLC and chiral purification.
• Peptide bioanalysis.
• Stability assessment, impurity profiling, and degradation studies.
• Assist with PKPD modelling activities to estimate efficacious dose/response in humans and other pre-clinical species when needed
• Experience coordinating execution of in vitro ADME/DMPK assays with different CRO partners
