NEKTERNektar Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a pipeline of drug candidates that utilize its PEGylation and polymer conjugate technology platforms, which are designed to improve the benefits of drugs for patients. Position Summary:
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and creative Scientist II, Research Biology with a focus in Immunology for our Translational Research team in our San Francisco office. This individual will focus on mechanistic pharmacology and functional biology with emphasis on in vivo and ex vivo primary models of disease. The Scientist will conceive experimental design strategies to characterize novel targets, to test efficacy of potential therapeutics, and to develop relevant biomarker strategies for further development in a variety of disease areas, including autoimmune diseases and immuno-oncology. The scientist is expected to lead and participate in the conduct of experiments in various biological systems. We are seeking someone who is an expert in relevant experimental biology techniques, including: flow cytometry, cell culture, and biochemical/cell- based assays. Additional in vitro techniques, including qPCR and experience in handling primary human cells and in vivo experience in disease model testing are desirable. A strong immunology background is required, with immuno-oncology experience a plus. This individual will lead technology development in the area of in vitro and ex vivo assays. Additionally, s/he will interpret and communicate experimental findings and documents according to approved Nektar policy. We are seeking someone who maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and develops and analyzes new product concepts by reviewing preclinical and clinical literature. The Scientist may lead discovery teams, as necessary, act as a Translational Research functional representative on a team, as well as manage junior scientists and research associates. This position contributes to and supports the company’s research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.

Job Description
Expertise in state-of-the art in vitro and ex vivo functional assays that are highly translational and have an impact on throughput and project progression. Must have expertise with specific assays and models used for immunological functional evaluation of therapeutic candidates.
Leads in the use of professional and scientific concepts to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.
Synthesizes multiple data sources and draws general, non-obvious conclusions. Defines complex problems, develops approaches and develops experiments with sound judgment. Puts work practices in context with larger team and participates in the implementation of change when required. Ability to work collaboratively on multiple projects, concurrently and to coordinate activities with other team members. Must be able to clearly communicate scientific information both written and oral. Conversant in writing reports and protocols.
Ability to manage external study activities through CROs and collaborators. May lead staff or a group, provides training as needed, and ensures adherence to company policies and quality requirements. Works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. May determine methods and procedures on new assignments.

Candidate Profile
A PhD in a scientific discipline is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted. A minimum of 4 years work experience in a research and/or development environment is required. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience. Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant experience may also be considered. Prior experience in immunology is needed.
Additional requirements include:
Must be able to demonstrate significant success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
Must be current and active in field, while able to demonstrate expert knowledge in scientific principles and concepts both internally and externally with sustained performance and accomplishment. Must be able to compose sound written work. Must be willing to work as part of a team. Must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills are required. Strong computer skills are required including a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and GraphPad Prism. Experience working in an FDA regulated environment and knowledge of current GMPs as they apply to laboratory practices is helpful.
