BRIC-National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG) Kalyani is an Institute of Government of India, Ministry of Science & Technology, Department of Biotechnology. The Institute has created the necessary physical infrastructure and critical platform technologies to support research, translation and trainingin biomedical genomics.

Post : Project Associate-I

Applications are invited for the position of Project Linked Person for extramural project to be executed by the BRIC-National institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani. Selected applicants will be appointed initially for one year. The tenure of appointment may be extended depending on performance and availability of funds.

Project Name : Genetically Engineered Macrophage Microvesicles Carrying Human β- Defensin-2 for Targeted Treatment of Uropathogenic E. coli in Diabetic Bladder Infections

Principal Investigator’s name : Dr. Soumitra Mohanty

Research Description : Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases in India, and diabetes further increases susceptibility. While E. coli–uroepithelial interactions are well studied, the role of tissue-resident macrophages remains poorly understood. This project will investigate how macrophage-mediated regulation of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) contribute to UTIs and assess whether boosting these host defences can offer a therapeutic alternative that reduces antibiotic resistance. We will examine how chronic glucose exposure affects microvesicle packaging and function, and whether restoring AMP expression can enhance their antimicrobial potential even under diabetic conditions. A major focus of this study is to define the molecular mechanism regulating AMPs in high glucose environments, particularly the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). We will characterize lncRNA-mediated pathways, assess their presence in macrophage-derived microvesicles, and use CRISPR-based approaches to validate their regulatory functions. By elucidating how lncRNAs modulate AMP expression and microvesicle biology, we aim to uncover a host-directed therapeutic strategy to strengthen bladder defences. Overall, this research will advance understanding of diabetes- associated UTI susceptibility and may identify novel targets to prevent recurrent infections through modulation of macrophage-derived antimicrobial pathways.
