Women are important part of any society. Therefore it is responsibility of every citizen to take care of welfare of women. However, recent brutal of cases rape and murder of innocent girls shocked the whole country. These incidences sparked countrywide protests and agitations. Our government is encouraging education of girl child and reservation for women in various sectors. However, unless our girls are feeling safe in our country, these measures are inadequate. With rampant eve teasing, molestation, rape and acid attacks, no girl can concentrate on her studies. As an important part of society, scientists must combat these social evils to protect our mothers, sisters and daughters through their scientific knowledge and power.

Can scientists with their brilliant minds and knowledge help to save our women?

Yes. This can be done at various levels:
1. Personal gadgets which can help a woman in distress can be made. These gadgets can be fitted in personal items such as cell phones, wristwatches, hair bands, bracelets, rings, necklaces etc. A simple push of a button can alert a relative or police about position of victim. Alternatively, it can create a short but strong burst of supersonic/electromagnetic waves which can disorient the attackers, thus helping the woman to escape. E.g. mobile phone stun gun.

2. Other protective devices like pepper spray are popular among woman. Some products (pepper spray lipstick, pepper spray key chain, pepper spray pen, etc), are already in market. In addition to this, sprays containing gas which can make attacker unconscious or cause severe body etching can be made. Sprays which can produce a smoke screen which allows the victim to escape can also be considered.

3. Umbrellas which shoot small pin towards attacker can be manufactured. These pins can be designed in such a way that it can knock out attacker for many minutes/hours.

4. Ladies shoes/sandals containing small hidden knives (which can open quickly by a simple mechanism) can be designed, which can injure the attacker by a kick.

5. Strong bracelets with retractable spikes can be made. These can save a girl’s life/face, when attacked by knife and can also be used as weapon to knock off attacker.

6. Strong rubber bands can be attached to the bangles/bracelets, which can be stretched and shot at attacker’s face or eyes to disable him temporarily.

7. Small portable devices like modified Swiss army knife (containing small sharp knife, pepper spray, etching powder etc.) can be made, in which a single button can unlock all the protective gears at once.

8. Textile scientists can develop fabrics which are very difficult to tear up and strong enough to minimize damage from knife attacks. Dresses made from these fabrics can save modesty and lives of many women. Scientists have already made clothes with GPS, which can alert relatives of women in case of emergency.

9. Scarfs, dupattas or handkerchiefs can be made acid resistant by special treatment. In the case of acid attack, simple covering the face with these clothes can prevent or at least minimize the damage to the girl, saving her from horrible life ahead.

10.Ladies dresses/saris can be made from fire resistant clothes. This also helps to reduce incidences of household accidents.

11. IT scientists can develop software which can track the transfer of obscene mms (via Bluetooth or message) and help to pinpoint criminals.

All these devices/gadgets should be made cheap and easily available to all age groups of women. All girls/women should be aware of products, which can save their lives. However, every woman should know that “presence of mind” is the best weapon/protection for them. With proper use of mind, anything, be it a stone or book or pin or purse or pen, can be an effective weapon in emergency.

So when you see a eve teasing, molestation, rape and acid attack, do not think “It is not my problem!” Because if you don’t act, it will be “YOUR” problem soon.
