Job Description:
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of this position is to provide scientific leadership and drug discovery/medicinal chemistry expertise to a group of direct reports that support multiple lead discovery and lead optimization projects.  Develops and takes ownership of various aspects and strategic initiatives within the medicinal chemistry function.  May serve as Discovery Project Leader for various NCE programs, or as Target Chemist within one or more Project Teams. Must have proven track of effective project leadership within cross-functional teams, including decision making, influencing, integrating input, communicating effectively, and managing highly performing project teams. Must be able to critique, prioritize and give credible scientific input on new concepts, molecular designs and other ideas coming from his/her group, or other groups within the function.  In addition he/she is expected to propose and often implement creative solutions to experiments or entire approaches.
Hires, directs, and develops qualified scientific staff and ensures that projects are accomplished on time and within budget.  Must able to manage the performance of his/her group effectively resulting in highest productivity, creativity and efficiency.  Demonstrates ability to contribute on various aspects outside own scientific area, and is able to collaborate with stakeholders from all relevant functions.

Main Interfaces
Develops and maintains strong awareness of external scientific and technological advances in the field of drug discovery.  Develops contacts with thought leaders, professional organizations, and institutions. Represents EMD Serono chemistry externally.
Maintains strong interactions with external collaborators, CROs, consultants etc.


Key Tasks & Responsibilities
Manages a group of medicinal chemists.  Sets priorities, manages performance and quality, coaches/mentors a group of 2-8 scientists.  Helps the development of his/her group, and takes measures to create a group environment that allows innovation and ensures high productivity and laboratory safety.
Provides scientific expertise and leadership within his/her group, but also within the entire global NCE Tech function, and across other functions.  He/She is able to integrate multiple complex data sets, analyze/interpret them and propose solutions.   
Communicates very effectively in written and oral form.  He/she is able to write high quality complete scientific reports, publications and has excellent presentation and public speaking skills.  He/She is able to critique scientific presentations/reports in professional and credible manner.  Represents and increases the reputation of EMD Serono in external scientific meetings. Communicates and collaborates effectively with CROs, consultants and other external organizations.

Keeps supervisor and direct reports informed of progress and activities.  Participates actively in department meetings, project meetings and other global committee meetings, and shares openly his/her scientific ideas, and technology knowledge. Assumes responsibility for executing strategic initiatives within the function.


In collaboration with the safety officer, is responsible for safety in the laboratory: ensures that safety guidelines and instructions are followed by all his/her staff in the lab, and is accountable for the safety of his/her direct reports and visitors. Recognizes potential safety problems and takes action to rectify them. Proposes or decides on equipment purchases and other laboratory improvements.
Keeps up-to-date in the literature related to his/her field. Acts as an expert resource in his/her scientific field and in related disciplines.

Desired Profile:
Education/Languages
Ph.D degree and 7-11 years of post-doc related industrial drug discovery experience
Masters degree and at least 13 years of related experience
Bachelors degree and at least 15 years of related experience
Fluency in spoken and written English is required

Professional Skills & Experience
Must have proven scientific leadership proficiency in medicinal chemistry
Good publication record in peer reviewed journals often as first author
Leadership and mentorship abilities with significant experience in managing multiple direct reports
Successful drug discovery record, with compounds that have advanced in clinical trials

Personal Skills & Competencies
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to effectively present scientific data and concepts to international standards
Strong team spirit and excellent interpersonal skills
Ability for strategic thinking
