Merck Millipore, a division of Merck Specialties Pvt. Ltd., India (MERCK MILLIPORE) has established India Innovation Award (the “Award”) as an
"Indian scientific award that celebrates, encourages and inspires innovation in Indian scientific community working in government funded and not-for-profit research institutes in India"

Purpose of the Award:
IIndia Innovation Award is intended to recognize the outstanding contributions to the advancement of research in the field of Life Sciences. The Award covers the field of Innovation in the areas of Life Science i.e. Green Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical and Bioanalytics, Proteomics, Genomics, Drug Discovery and Delivery, Biomanufacturing, Biomarkers and Synthetic Biology.

The Award:
The Award will be granted every year, with the first award being made in mid-2012, as long as MERCK MILLIPORE publicly announces a continuation.
The Award will be accompanied by a payment in the following categories:
1st Award: 3,000,000 INR
2nd Award: 2,000,000 INR
3rd Award: 1,000,000 INR


This amount will be revised when need arises by the MERCK MILLIPORE Award Committee. The recipient(s) will also receive a certificate, a trophy, recognition in the MERCK MILLIPORE Award newsletter and will be featured on MERCK MILLIPORE’s Award website. The recipient of the Award shall have the responsibility and obligation to pay income tax on the awarded amount if applicable. The recipient of the Award will be provided one night stay and return economy class air ticket (for one person) from their location to the city hosting the award function.

Award Committee:
The Award will be granted following a selection process made by an Award Committee (“Scientific Advisory Board”) at a science conference to be organized by MERCK MILLIPORE. The Award Committee shall consist of 7 members of which one shall be an employee of Merck and six shall be nationally as well as internationally reputed scientists working in the Life Science sector.


Award Ceremony:
The award ceremony will take place at the opening session of the science conference that will be organized by MERCK MILLIPORE. The Managing Director of Merck Specialties Pvt. Ltd., or a person nominated by him, will present the Award to the recipient. Each recipient(s) will be asked to present a short public statement during the science conference in the year in which the Award is given. The topic should be relevant to the work for which the Award has been awarded.

Eligibility:

  • Any Indian or foreign nationals working in government funded or not-for-profit research institutes in India.
  • The Patent has been granted or paper published in reputed scientific journals between 1st January, 2011 to 31st December 2011.
  • The patent/publication covers the field of Innovation in the areas of Life Science i.e. Green Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical and Bioanalytics, Proteomics, Genomics, Drug Discovery and Delivery, Biomanufacturing, Biomarkers and Synthetic Biology.
  • The list of reputed scientific journals for publication section are: Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Cell, Chemistry & Biology, International Journal of Biological Science, International Journal of Life Science, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Genetics, Journal of Molecular Biology, Life Science, Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, Molecular Cell, Nano Letters, Nature Journals, Proceedings of National Academy of Science and Science.
  • The patent/publication should be either a new product or process. It should contribute towards improving the quality of life and help in employment generation and achieve economical transformation among others.
  • The general criteria applied in selecting the patent/publication would depend upon the impact level, creativity, outreach & sustainability.
  • Merck employees & SAB member’s direct relatives are not eligible for the award.

The Award may be granted to an individual or a small group contributing to the same innovative work. The Award will be made in recognition of a specific project / programme or body of work leading to a patented invention (represented by a patent application granted by the respective national authorities in at least India, the USA or Europe) or a paper published/accepted in a reputed scientific journal (as per the list available above). The recipients must be living and working with Indian government funded or not-for-profit research institute at the time of award.

Application process and rules:

  1. To be considered eligible for the Award, candidates must submit their application on the official homepage on www.merck-chemicals.in/ www.merck.co.in as per the procedure that will be laid out by the Award Committee.
  2. The Award adjudication shall consider applications submitted during the nomination period which starts initially from September 26th, 2011 and ends on January 15th, 2012. However all patents granted (in at least either India, the USA or Europe) or a paper published/accepted in a reputed scientific journal (as per the list available in the website) should be in the calendar year 2011 for the 2012 award. For the following years the nomination period will be published in due time but will most probably run from mid September till mid January.
  3. Applications shall not be made by e-mail / fax / courier. Applications which are not made through the Award homepage will be disqualified and will not participate in the Award.
  4. Applications based on Patents granted or paper published/accepted after the deadline would not be accepted.
  5. In case of two or more inventors winning a prize under a single application, the award would be shared equally among them.
  6. applicant(s) if short listed for the award should forward upon request a No Objection Certificate from the head of his organization. Final winners will be asked to submit any one proof of identity (passport copy, driving license, etc).
  7. MERCK MILLIPORE officials or members of the Award Committee or canvassing in any form in this regard may lead to disqualification of the application.
  8. The Award Committee has the right to disqualify any applicant who does not comply with any of the terms and conditions under this Award policy.
  9. Employees of Merck or its subsidiaries & Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) member’s direct relatives are not eligible for the Award nomination.
  10. The Award Committee retains the right to promote and seek publicity for all Award winners.
  11. Once the applicant has uploaded his application (final submission) no further changes or resubmission will be permissible. However request for any technical errors while applying during the online submission may be sent to the Innovation Team (india.innovation@merckgroup.com) which after considering the merit of the request may be edited by the Innovation Team
  12. An organization/institute can submit multiple entries as long as the patent numbers or the paper published are covering different research topics. Each submission would have to be done separately through the Award webpage.
  13. A candidate can apply for both category of patent and publication section, however for consideration for the prize only one category would be applicable.
  14. An individual who has left the organization at the time of web submission but was a part of the invention/publication can apply for the award. However authorization letter would be required from the head of the organization or department from where the said research was performed if shortlisted.
  15. the applicant has submitted the application in the website successfully, he would be provided with a Merck Unique Identification Number (MUID), with which the applicant can use to view his application details later. An e-mail would also be sent to the applicant.
  16. The applicant can retrieve the Merck Unique Identification number if he has forgotten by sending a mail to india.innovation@merckgroup.com requesting for his MUID by providing either his patent number or publication journal name along with the page number.
  17. The participation in this Award is free of cost.

Selection process:
The recipient will be selected by the Award Committee using the following procedures:

  1. The Award Committee shall consist of seven members, all of whom shall be elected by MERCK MILLIPORE. Election shall be for a period of two years. A retiring member may be re-elected twice in succession. Thereafter, election for a maximum of one more two-year period may occur after three years. A member who has reached seventy years of age may not be re-elected. If a member retires prior to the expiry of his term of office, another person shall be elected for the remainder of the period.
  2. A General Secretary of the Award Committee shall be nominated by MERCK MILLIPORE.
  3. A quorum of the Award Committee shall exist when at least five (5) members are present. Voting shall be by open ballot.
  4. Every year in the month of October the Award Committee shall issue a public note to the persons who, under Article V, are entitled to make applications concerning the Award to submit their application and evidence in support of them, prior to the closing of the nomination period in December of the same year.
  5. During the process, the award Committee shall issue a first shortlist of the applicants by March 31st of the next year and a final Award nominee list by April 30th of the next year. Before the end of the month of May the Award Committee shall submit to MERCK MILLIPORE a report and final proposal concerning the Award of the year together with a short reason for the final proposal. The winner will be announced by June 30th.
  6. The discussions, opinions and proposals of the Award Committee concerning the award of the Award may not be published or otherwise disclosed.
  7. Remuneration for members and co-opted members of the Award Committee or for experts engaged by the Award Committee for specific purposes with the approval of MERCK MILLIPORE, shall be determined by MERCK MILLIPORE.
  8. The Award Committee will screen and evaluate all applications made according to these rules and shortlisted applicants will be invited to make personal presentations. Final winners will be announced at a Merck Millipore Annual Scientific Symposia that will be held around middle of every year.
  9. Winning nominee would be invited in the annual Merck Award Ceremony to collect the award on behalf of his group members. It would be the duty of the primary applicant to get a NOC as may be required from the other co-inventor/co-authors to participate and present the technical paper used for the application in the Award ceremony.
  10. The recipient of the Award will be provided one night stay and return economy class air ticket (for one person) from their location to the city hosting the Merck Award Ceremony.

General clauses:
No obligation to grant the Award: MERCK MILLIPORE and the Award Committee shall be under no obligation or restrictions in the selection of a certain nominee and no nominee has the right to be selected. Once the Award decision is made public, the winner shall have the right to claim the respective Award as per decision of the Award Committee.

Declining the Award: Should a selected winner decline the Award, the Award Committee may select another winner if time permits or decide not to make an Award (in that category) in that year.

No appeal: No appeals may be made against the decision of the Award Committee to make the award to a given winner. Proposals received for the award, and investigations and opinions concerning the Award, will be kept confidential. This does not include a short reasoning given by the Award Committee for the winner of each Award.

Death of the recipient: Work produced by a person since deceased shall not be considered for an award. If, however, an Award winner dies after being selected but before he has received the Award, then the Award will be presented posthumously.
