Job Description
Function of the Position:
This is a supervisory position in which the incumbent applies scientific principles and practical laboratory experience to manage the USP-India’s Synthetics Laboratory and staff.  Oversees daily operation of the laboratory and interactions with other USP departments, The incumbent should handle a team of scientists and responsible for complete literature search, route designing, preparation, isolation, purification and characterization of a variety of chemicals and drug substances.

Job Duties:
- Develops work plans and statements of work (SOW) for core laboratories.
- Supervises staff, as assigned.  Performs supervisory duties such as performance reviews, objective setting, staff development and career counseling.
- Responsible for carrying out  literature search to arrive at various synthetic pathways of the organic compounds of interest by which a candidate material can be synthesized.
- Responsible to arrange literature citations from internet and library, drafting project proposals
- To plan and ensure that the raw materials are available to execute the projects.
- Responsible for planning and allocation of work to their subordinates
- Extensive characterization of compounds using IR, advanced NMR spectroscopy, Mass Spectra, Elemental analysis etc.
- Responsible for review the records and documents
- Responsible for the productivity of the entire group
- Responsible for the compliance of Quality Management Systems
- Responsible for the completion of projects in timely manner
- Helps develop SOPs and policies and then instructs other staff in these operational policies
- Coordinates with Quality Assurance staff to ensure the implementation of corrective actions
- Design innovative route of synthesis for new molecules
- Provides for the training and development of the team members
- Provides for the training, development, assignment,and replacement of Synthetics Laboratory personnel
- Assists in the development and implementation of safety protocols impacting Synthetics Laboratory personnel
- Participates in USP cross-functional teams as ppropriate
- Performs other related duties as required.

Candidate Profile
Ph.D. in synthetic  organic chemistry from a recognized University or Institute of repute with about 6-12 years of relevant  work experience in the  field of synthetic organic chemistry,  medicinal chemistry and development of synthetic processes for organic molecules in a pharmaceutical company.  Post-doctoral experience would be an added qualification. The candidate should have an experience of leading a R&D group of scientists. The incumbent must  be an expert in designing new route of synthesis and conversant with advanced analytical techniques such as NMR, IR, MS, CHNS, TGA, DSC, preparative HPLC, Flash Chromotography etc . in elucidation of structure of new molecules.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
A comprehensive knowledge of the science involved in the development of synthetic organic molecules, complete characterization of unknown compounds and.  Should have demonstrated experience in the design, development and implementation of synthetic schemes in a cost effective manner.  Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills are required.  Good interpersonal skills and proven ability to function in a team-oriented environment are necessary. Proven supervisory and staff management skills are a must.
