Bristol-Myers Squibb's drug discovery and development work takes place across a network of state-of the-art facilities worldwide. The Biocon Bristol-Myers Squibb Research & Development Center (BBRC) is a collaboration between Bristol-Myers Squibb and Syngene International, a Biocon- group company, and is based in Bangalore, India. This state-of-the-art 200,000 sq ft facility houses integrated R&D capabilities for over 450 scientists. Fully operational since 2009, the site is involved in Target Identification, Lead Discovery and Lead Optimization all the way through to early stage Pharmaceutical Development and Clinical Biomarkers R&D.

Job Description

  • Report to department head and lead a team of 20-40 chemists and chemical engineers in the Chemical Development and Scale-Up department to develop chemical processes and synthesize intermediates and APIs for clinical studies on laboratory, kilo lab and pilot plant scale.
  • Provide scientific and operational leadership, drive project progression, and manage resources and facilities.
  • In collaboration with BMS functional leads (BBRC and US), develop project strategies, assess project progress, and take appropriate actions to meet deliverables.
  • Establish work processes to align technical teams in India and the US, ensure seamless collaboration, promote efficient technical knowledge sharing, and transfer of material and documentation between sites.
  • Propose creative and innovative solutions to technical problems backed by a sound understanding of fundamental scientific principles.
  • Set and maintain high safety standards in the work environment.
  • Possess a good understanding of cGMP requirements and ensure compliance.
  • In consultation with local leadership and BMS US functional leaders, develop staff proficiencies and capabilities through appropriate coaching, mentoring and training in line with career development and performance partnership discussions.
  • Serve as a key member of BMS’ site leadership team in India; establish and maintain productive interactions across departments and with external partners.
  • Help craft the department’s operational and growth strategy by recommending appropriate investments in staff development, equipment and technology.
  • Make significant contributions to the wider scientific community by publishing and presenting research results in high-impact journals or conferences.
  • Assist in developing relationships with local academic institutions.
  • Champion BMS’ core behaviors—Passion, Accountability, Innovation and Speed.

 

Candidate Profile :

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (with an M.S. or equivalent degree in Organic Chemistry), with at least 10 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Expertise in chemical process development and scale-up, route invention and implementation, process safety, and analytical sciences.
  • Strong first-principles mechanistic skills.
  • Thorough understanding of cGMP and experience in API production in a GMP environment (laboratory, kilo lab and pilot plant).
  • Strong track record of project delivery under rapid timelines with emphasis on Safety and Quality.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the drug discovery and development process as it relates to Pharmaceutical Development.
  • Working knowledge of basic formulation and material science approaches.
  • A strong track record of scientific innovation as evidenced by patents, publications and/or presentations at conferences
